Antibiotic therapy today is the only chance for an animal to recover in the case of many infectious diseases. These agents are actively used even for viral pathologies, although drugs of this class have practically no effect on viruses. This is done in order to prevent the development of secondary pathogenic microflora.
One of the serious problems is the noticeable high cost of modern antimicrobials, because of which many owners are looking for any options for savings. But you do not need to buy dubious medicines. There are old, but well-proven antibiotics, which include ordinary Amoxicillin.
As we already said, this is an antibiotic (beta-lactam type). ABOUTIt belongs to antibacterial drugs with a wide spectrum of action, it has a good effect on all the most common gram-positive and gram-negative strains of pathogenic microorganisms. The mechanism of action involves a violation of the synthesis of mucopeptides, which are the main structural elements of the cell membranes of a bacterial cell. Because of this, the permeability of the latter increases many times, the pathogen dies due to a violation of the osmotic pressure.
Depending on the dosage form (Amoxicillin in tablets, in the form of a solution or suspension), it within two to eight hours, completely absorbed by the body, the maximum concentration of the drug in biological fluids and body tissues remains for about 12 hours. At the therapeutic level, the concentration remains for at least two days. More than 90% of the drug is excreted into the external environment with urine, while the antibiotic remains in almost unchanged form (does not break down, is not metabolized). Partially withdrawal is carried out with liver secrets.
As we already said, the form of release of the drug is quite diverse: tablets, Amoxicillin in ampoules, as well as in the form of a suspension. But this, for the most part, applies only to medical forms. In veterinary medicine (as a rule) use only the injection version of the drug (15% solution). It is much more convenient to dose and apply. But! There is also a suspension for injection in veterinary and “ordinary” pharmacies. Many practitioners do not recommend using it, since the injection site often swells, and the injection process itself is extremely painful. The solution is absorbed by the body much better.
The drug is packaged in bottles of dark glass, the volume of which is 10-100 ml and ampoules with a capacity of 1 ml. Analogs of the drug are very numerousbut in most cases they are not used in veterinary medicine. I would like to highlight perhaps Amoxiclav. This is a mixture of the same Amoxicillin and clavulanic acid. Such a composition is much more resistant to metabolization in the animal and human body, its therapeutic concentration lasts longer. Considered significantly stronger than the "parent" drug. Besides, Available for sale: Amoxillate, Amoxisar, Danemox etc. (about 20 drugs).
Opportunity and options for side effects
Note that with amoxicillin (as with any other antibiotic, by the way) you need to be careful. In no case do not self-administer the drug to your pet and, moreover, do not enter it "for prevention". The list of side effects is quite extensive.
Most often, various manifestations are noted. allergic reactions. The injection site often turns red (hyperemia), allergic rhinitis and conjunctivitis. In more severe cases, it is possible dermatitis and erythema. If you notice that the cat has developed an allergy after the introduction of the antibiotic, you should immediately stop taking the medicine! With uncontrolled and prolonged use of the drug, there have been cases Quincke edema and reactions similar to the so-called "serum sickness" (anaphylactic reaction of the body in response to an infusion of polyvalent autoimmune serum). Particularly "talented" owners managed to bring their pet to full anaphylactic shock, which, alas, often ended in death. So that Amoxicillin for cats is a drug that needs a "respectful" attitude.
May be observed vomiting, taste preferences are distorted in a cat, often strong diarrhea (especially with prolonged use). In more rare cases, cases have been described. ulcerative stomatitisthat appeared on the background of taking Amoxicillin. Also, cats can become nervous, excited, there are cases ataxia (impaired coordination of movements), the animal behavioral changes dramatically. Sometimes this is observed due to the fact that the injections of the drug are rather painful, and the cat just hurts (why he can walk, strangely setting his paw up).
Uncontrolled by a competent specialist, taking the drug due to possible problems with the hematopoietic and cardiovascular system. So, anemia, agranulocytosis, tachycardia and tachypnea (dyspnea), eosinophilia and neutropenia are often noted.
Some animals have complicated, hoarse breathing. If the cat has at least some problems with the liver, prescribing it to this drug is strictly contraindicated, since the likelihood of hepatitis is quite high. Again, prolonged and unreasonable use of this antibiotic can provoke the development of fungal diseases of the oral cavity and genitals. The most "harmless" problems in such cases are severe dysbiosis, possible colitis and enteritis.
After reading the list of possible side effects, you decided that you would never give Amoxicillin for animals to your cat? In vain. The fact is that almost ALL modern antibiotics sometimes cause reactions much worse (up to cerebral edema). But the main - all this is possible only with prolonged and improper use of the drug, when no rules and instructions are followed.
Indications for use, dosage
The drug is used in the following cases:
- Various upper and lower respiratory tract diseasesincluding acute and chronic bronchitis, pneumonia.
- An effective drug (due to withdrawal in an unchanged state with urine) with many Infectious pathologies of the genitourinary system.
- Well, the medicine has proven itself in the treatment of infectious diseases of the skincaused by staphylococci and streptococci.
- Excellent results obtained. in the treatment of mastitis and, in part, endometritis in cats.
The drug is administered subcutaneously or intramuscularly. If for some reason you have to use a suspension (we already wrote about its shortcomings), then it is advisable to warm up the medicine before use to about 37 degrees Celsius. So the likelihood of developing painful swelling at the injection site becomes less. Also in this case it is advisable to administer the drug subcutaneously in the area of the scapula. Since the skin in this place intensively "rubs" when walking, the drug quickly resolves without the appearance of painful tumors.
At all, Amoxicillin should be injected into the cat only by qualitatively fixing the animal (injection is rather painful). The dosage is simple - 1 ml per 10 pounds of live weight of the pet. The dosage of amoxicillin for kittens is not defined, since the drug is prescribed only to those animals whose weight has reached at least a kilogram. If you feed a kitten with a strong antibiotic, there is a high risk of liver damage!
But what if there is no antibiotic at hand, either in the form of a solution or in the form of a suspension? You can use tablets (Amoxicillin 150 mg). In this case, 12.5 mg per kilogram of live weight. But if the cat is small, it is extremely inconvenient to dose the tablets. Because of this, it is recommended to use a solution or suspension for injection.
In some cases the dose of the drug may be reviewed, but the decision on this should be made exclusively by a veterinarian. So, the dosage of amoxicillin in the treatment of acute otitis media, when the animal may lose hearing (and there is a risk of sepsis), in the first days, shock is used, that is, the volume of the drug is doubled. This should be done carefully, constantly monitoring the condition of the animal and monitoring for signs of serious side effects.
