How much to give petroleum jelly to a cat?

In nature, cats usually help their digestion to function normally. To solve problems and even to prevent their occurrence, they eat special varieties of grass. However, domestic cats do not have this opportunity. Therefore, the owners, to help the animal cope with constipation, give the cat a liquid paraffin.

Often, cat owners face such a problem as constipation.

Such an upset in animals is not uncommon, because a lot of factors influence digestion. Negative effect, for example:

  • Irregular and unbalanced nutrition;
  • Insufficient fluid intake;
  • Insufficiently active lifestyle;
  • Wool swallowed by fluffy cats while washing.

Mechanism of action

Vaseline oil consists of hydrocarbons obtained from natural materials. It is formed as a by-product in the production of paraffin. It has no color, taste or smell, and is absolutely harmless to animals. With the correct use of liquid paraffin, the cat easily defecates and does not experience any side effects from the drug.

Once in the stomach, paraffin oil envelops the intestinal wall with a strong, non-absorbent film, which allows the stuck contents to easily move on. In addition, it helps to thin the feces, so that the process of defecation after constipation is easy and does not cause the cat pain.

Use the drug if:

  • The cat cannot go to the tray for two to three days;
  • The cat makes an attempt to defecate: gets into the tray, becomes in a characteristic position, strain, but nothing happens;
  • The cat does not feel well: moves little, meows;
  • The belly of the animal is hard and swollen, touching it gives the cat an unpleasant sensation.

You can not use the drug if you assume that the cat has bowel obstruction, or if the animal had stomach ulcers. Also, do not give the drug to a pregnant cat.

Drug dosage

If you are faced with the problem for the first time, you need to find out how much petroleum jelly to give the cat with constipation.

An adult cat with vaseline oil should be given no more than 20 milligrams per day. Usually, veterinarians recommend giving the cat 5-10 milligrams of the substance and wait. If the drug does not work within 3-4 hours, you can give another dose of 5 milligrams.

The time it takes for the medicine to work depends on the severity of the constipation and the body of the cat. However, if you gave your cat a daily allowance, and bowel movements did not occur, you should contact your veterinarian. In this case, it is possible that constipation is caused not by problems in nutrition and lifestyle, but by something else: an obstruction of the intestine or an inversion of the intestines, for example. With these problems, the use of improper treatment will not only be ineffective, but also harmful to the cat.

If you experience constipation in a kitten, liquid paraffin will also help solve the problem.. For kittens, another way is used to calculate the dosage. You need to weigh the kitten and give medicine at the rate of 1 milligram of substance per 1 kilogram of the animal’s weight. Moreover, if after 3-4 hours there is no result, and bowel movement has not occurred, you do not need to give an additional dose to the small pet. It will be safer to immediately show the kitten to the veterinarian and follow the recommendations received from the specialist.

You must remember: Vaseline oil is an emergency drug. It can not be used often or considered as a means of prevention, otherwise you risk harming the body of the animal.
